Research Description
The focus of my study is on the methods used by the Ainu people of Hokkaido to negotiate their cultural identity within Japanese society. I take a sociolinguistic approach to this research, focusing on the linguistic practices employed by the Ainu. I aim to study the ways in which linguistic creativity expands the social toolkit at the Ainu’s disposal to create spaces of hybridity in which they can negotiate their identity.
